Introduction
Xi Graphics has supported ATI graphics hardware since the dark ages, and was quick to support the RADEON architecture (the R100) when it first came out about four years ago. Since then we have supported the R200 and R250 chips and the various MOBILITY versions of these chips. Support for the R300 and later chips has been restricted somewhat by a new ATI Management Decision to withhold certain register documentation from Third Parties, information necessary for full support of some cards using these chips.
Meanwhile, the Summit Series supports a number of R100, R200 and R300 series graphics chips on x86 platforms running various operating systems.
Support for ATI RADEON chips on Sun Microsystems SPARC platforms has recently been added, beginning with OpenGL v1.5 support on the RADEON 9250 card, and 2D WallDisplay support for the FireMV 2X00 cards. This support was developed in response to requests from customers who desired a wider selection of graphics hardware to use on their SPARC systems. As we looked into the area, it did appear that the standard offerings from Sun were a bit limited, and did not include Nvidia hardware, even though Nvidia seems to have the bulk of Sun's x86 business. The Open Source Community - which Sun seems nowadays to heartily support - seems not to have performed for SPARC, so maybe Xi Graphics can be of help. For some of our views on the Open Source Movement, relative to the new SPARC packages, see OpenSourceATI, and Problems w/freeware Linux Graphics?.
