Frequently Asked Questions About Summit License Keys

Introduction
Summit License Keys can be purchased using an on-line process which results in a License Key being generated "to order" and e-mailed to the purchaser. The process is a "closed loop" mechanism, which requires as an input a piece of information generated by the particular Summit Demo the purchaser is running on his system. This information is called a "Product Code" and is a string of characters which define which Summit Series and Edition is being licensed (run), what computer platform (Intel/AMD 32-bit, Alpha 64-bit, Itanium 64-bit, etc.) is being used, and what OS is being used (Linux, Solaris, True-64, etc.).

The Product Code, along with Customer information, date, and so on, is used to generate a Summit License Key File which is e-mailed to the customer and also kept at Xi Graphics for registration purposes. Customer's credit card numbers are not kept (and can't be obtained from us by hacking ;-)).

Answers to FAQs

"If I change my CPU from Intel to AMD, will my License Key still work?"

A License Key for 32-bit x86 architecture does not differentiate any further than "Intel/AMD 32-bit architecture." The particular model or speed of the CPU is ignored. The Key does differentiate between 32-bit and 64-bit architectures, however.

___

"If I change my Linux from S.u.S.E. to RedHat, will my License Key still work?"

Yes. Any distribution of Linux that is listed in the "Supported OSs" Table should work with your License Key.

___

"If I install a new version of Linux, will my License Key still work?"

Yes. Any distribution of Linux that is listed in the "Supported OSs" Table should work with your License Key.

_______

"If I change my graphics card, will my License Key still work?"

Only if it is the same make and model of card. If you switch to a different manufacturer or model of graphics card, the License Key should fail.

_________

"If there is a new update of my Summit driver, will my old Summit Key work on the new update?"

Yes. Save your License Key file. Download and install the new demo, then install your License Key file.

"I have been using Matrox G450 cards and the Summit DX Platinum driver in a product we manufacture and sell. Suddenly the driver does not work with the new batch of G450 cards. What do I do?"

This means the hardware has probably changed in some way. Check to see if we have an updated driver. If so, download the updated driver and use your existing License Key. If that does not work, contact us and we will provide you a new Key that is make for the new revison of the hardware.

______

"I bought a Silver Edition of a Summit driver, and want to upgrade to Platinum. How can I do that?"

Upgrades of Summit License Keys within a major release number is not allowed. Upgrade from 1.x to 2.x, or from 2.x to 3.x is allowed.

_______

"I have twelve identical computer systems on which I want to use Summit. Do I have to buy a License Key for each system?"

Yes. In fact, the "identcal computer systems" are really not identical for purposes of License Keys. Our regular licensing scheme now ties the Summit Key very tightly to the computer system on which the Product Key was generated. Each computer system will have its own unique License Key. For OEM (and Large End User) customers building and/or installing significant numbers of "identical computer systems", and who sign a Corporate License Agreement with us, we can "loosen" the Key so that it can be used many times on the "identical computer systems".

_______

"I have a Summit v2.2 License Key. Will it work on Summit v2.4?"

Yes.

________

"My company would like to have a Site License that would work on many different graphics cards. Is this possible with Summit?"

Yes. The Summit License Key mechanism is quite flexible and can accomodate the requirements of OEMs, large Corporate Sites, and so on. The "loosening" of the License Key(s) requires that the custmer execute a Corporate Licensing Agreement with us.
